What is GEO (generative engine optimisation)?
GEO is the practice of making your business easier for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and mention when they answer questions. It covers things like clear, quotable content on your site, consistent business information, and being referenced by sources those tools trust.
How is GEO different from SEO and AEO?
SEO is about ranking in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) is about being the direct answer, for example in featured snippets or voice results. GEO is about being mentioned or cited in answers written by AI tools.
In practice they overlap a lot. Clear content, a well-built site and a good reputation help with all three, which is why I treat GEO as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it.
Do I still need SEO if people are using ChatGPT?
Yes. People still use Google to find businesses, and AI tools often draw on the same web content that search engines index. A site that’s hard to crawl or has thin, unclear pages is likely to struggle in both.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in AI answers or on page one of Google?
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Search engines and AI tools change constantly and nobody outside them controls the results. What I can do is find the problems holding you back, put them in priority order, and help you fix them.
How long does SEO take to work?
It depends on your site, your competition and what needs fixing, but think in months rather than weeks. Technical fixes can show an effect fairly quickly once Google has recrawled the pages, while content and reputation take longer to build. Anyone promising first-page results in a few weeks is overselling.
